Unreal Online Subsystem engineering binding a newly first-party studio's titles to Xbox Live and Game Pass entitlement.
Partner studio: Puny Human
In Unreal Engine, an Online Subsystem is the abstraction layer that maps engine-level calls — identity, presence, friends, achievements, leaderboards, matchmaking, sessions, storage and entitlements — onto a specific platform backend. An Xbox Game Pass Online Subsystem binds Unreal to the Microsoft GDK and Xbox Live services.
Following the partner's acquisition by Microsoft in November 2018, its Unreal titles had to become first-party compliant: GDK toolchain, Xbox identity and sign-in flows, achievements and stats, connected storage, multiplayer session handling, and — critically — entitlement and license checks that correctly distinguish a Game Pass subscription from a purchase. All of it has to clear Xbox certification requirements.
Engineers implemented and integrated the Online Subsystem layer against the Microsoft GDK and Xbox Live services, covering identity, achievements, storage, sessions and Game Pass entitlement handling, and carried the work through certification requirements.
The deliverable was a reusable subsystem rather than a per-title integration, so subsequent titles inherited the platform binding rather than rebuilding it.
